Two great things about working at Kentucky Opera and staying at the Galt House; 1. The housing is incredible, they really make you feel special there, and there is plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the beautiful views of the Ohio River from your room, 2. You never have to worry about sleeping past 11 on Saturday.
The Belle of Louisville is a paddle boat that tours the Ohio River. Its a popular tourist attraction, and does a lot of business on the weekend. What distinguishes the BOL from other paddle boats, is that it’s equipped with a period calliope that launches into ragtime, popular songs, and river shanties upon every launch. To say that the Calliope is loud would be akin to saying that Lady Gaga is slightly eccentric… and I don’t think it’s been tuned since it was built…
I don’t think I will ever again be able to hear Popeye the Sailorman or the theme to Gilligan’s Island, without remembering fondly my experience at Kentucky Opera. What a great place to work, including all the idiosyncrasies of one of the most unique and fun towns in the south.
